An Alternative Proposal Towards Circular Economy and Redundant Landscape
Applying the concept and methodology in transformation of a single Silo to a holistic architectural design, the building project proposes a set of reconfiguration to the existing derelict Capital Steel Complex through a wider historical and societal context. In response to the recent withdrawals from the sustainable movement by Architects Declare, the programme celebrates the circular economy throughout every existing corner of the site, by considering them not as redundant wasteland but as a bank of materials with rich narrative indicated from its imperfection. In precedent to the regeneration project of Industrial Complex, Peter Latz stated that “Destruction has been protected so that it isn’t destroyed again by recultivation” which implies the cultural importance of the ruination. Through the full absorption of the existing fabric, the project preserves the spiritual integrity on a memorial level. In light of this, the derelict site is decomposed and categorized into a material bank, and transported to the bunker warehouse which has been regenerated into an immersive theatre while archiving the reclaimed as a part of historical display. The slow demolition changes the traditional concept of architectural completeness and mortality, arguing that the longevity of heritage can only be lengthened through a consistent update and renewal. The project acts as a manifesto against the modern construction in China which worships the speed and volume per capita. Throughout the proposal, the project incorporates a wider engagement beyond the immediate Site, questioning the means of construction, demolition and potentials of the industrial heritage.
